This New Year’s Eve, tonight, Grayling is set to make history with the first-ever “Canoe Drop,” taking place right in the heart of downtown on East Michigan Avenue in the 100 Block.

The event, a festive and unique twist on the traditional New Year’s Eve ball drop, marks the culmination of a long-held dream for the community and its deep roots in the legendary AuSable River and the world-famous AuSable River Canoe Marathon.

The inspiration for this one-of-a-kind event has been brewing for years.

“As a community with such a rich connection to the AuSable River and canoeing, this has always been something close to my heart,” said Downtown Development Association board member Michelle Millikin, the event organizer,  who has long envisioned a way to celebrate Grayling’s love for the river. “When I saw the Shamrock Drop in Roscommon last year, I knew the time had come to turn this dream into reality. It’s a perfect fit for Grayling, where canoeing and the marathon are such an integral part of our identity.”

Thanks to an outpouring of community support and a sponsorship by the Grayling Promotional Association, the Canoe Drop has become a reality.

Millikan said a special mention goes to Richard Ferrigan, owner of Grayling Fitness Center, whose dedication helped bring this event to life.

She said Ferrigan meticulously strung 2,000 twinkling lights on the canoe and attached a state-of-the-art countdown clock to ensure the celebration is both magical and timely.
