Tottenham Hotspur’s young midfielder, Lucas Bergvall, has been advised to remain patient for further Premier League opportunities after logging just 46 minutes in the top-flight under manager Ange Postecoglou this season.
Since arriving in North London for £8.5 million from Djurgarden this summer, the 18-year-old has made only brief appearances, coming off the bench in four league games. Despite limited playing time, Swedish journalist Olof Lundh believes Bergvall’s progress is promising, advising him to stay patient as he awaits more significant opportunities.
“It is so unusual for players to go from Allsvenskan to the Premier League and take a place,” Lundh noted. “If you are so young, even if he has taken huge steps, and hasn’t played very many at the highest level even in Sweden – then you have to have a little patience. If you are his age, you get to see all the minutes in the first season as a bonus. Everything still points in the right direction.”
Bergvall made his fourth start for Spurs during their 1-0 Europa League victory over AZ Alkmaar, where he contributed to the win by drawing a penalty. Richarlison converted from the spot in the 53rd minute, securing Tottenham’s third win in their European campaign. However, Bergvall exited the pitch 20 minutes later, clutching his leg. Postecoglou later explained the youngster was “just cramping up” due to his limited first-team playtime this season.
The manager emphasized the importance of Europa League games as valuable experience for Spurs’ younger players, including Mikey Moore, who impressed on the left wing in the close win.
In his ninth appearance of the season, Bergvall demonstrated his potential by completing 91% of his passes and showing defensive prowess, winning four of seven ground duels and making three tackles. As he continues to adapt to Premier League demands, Bergvall’s patience and development appear aligned with the club’s long-term plans for his growth.
