Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran recently opened up about his summer transfer saga and his commitment to the club’s future.
Duran, 20, who signed a new contract last month, revealed he faced serious interest from European clubs, with West Ham making a notable bid. Although initially interested in a move to the London Stadium, Duran credits Unai Emery, Villa’s sporting director Monchi, and advisor Damian Vidagany for helping him refocus on his role at Aston Villa.
Duran had a strong start to the season, scoring key goals against top teams like West Ham, Leicester City, Everton, Wolves, and Bayern Munich. His impressive form includes eight goals in 14 appearances, with strikes also against Wycombe, Bologna, and Crystal Palace. Reflecting on his summer experience, Duran admitted he was tempted by the interest from other clubs.
“As a young man, the head goes to other places,” he told Sky Sports, highlighting the importance of the support he received from Emery, Monchi, and Vidagany. “They kept me grounded and told me things as they had to be said,” he added, appreciating their role in helping him start the season with a positive mindset.
Emery also acknowledged Duran’s growth and potential. In August, Emery spoke about the young forward’s talent and his occasional struggles with patience. “He is young and making mistakes sometimes,” Emery said, stressing his commitment to mentoring Duran both as a player and as a person. Emery acknowledged Duran’s ambition but emphasized the importance of learning from the more experienced Ollie Watkins, who currently leads Villa’s attack.
Duran admitted he initially thought moving would grant him more playing time and a faster route to fulfilling his potential. However, Emery, Monchi, and Vidagany reassured him that staying at Villa would be best for his development.
Duran now feels focused and optimistic about Villa’s potential this season, expressing his excitement for what the team can achieve. “With experience, we’re going to do big things, and we’re working for that,” he said, indicating his commitment to both his and the club’s long-term success.
Duran’s comments highlight the supportive environment at Aston Villa, with strong guidance from the leadership team. As he continues to mature and develop under Emery’s watch, Duran hopes to make a lasting impact for Villa in the Premier League and beyond.
