The Buffalo Bills won’t be reuniting with former linebacker Tyrel Dodson, who is now joining one of their division rivals.
After unexpectedly being waived by the Seattle Seahawks this week—despite a strong showing of 71 tackles over nine starts—many speculated that the Bills might reclaim Dodson to support their linebacking corps. However, it was the Miami Dolphins who claimed him instead.
Return to the AFC East for Dodson
Dodson originally joined the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2019, spending his first season primarily on the practice squad before stepping into a larger role in 2020. Over four seasons with Buffalo, he played in 68 games, tallying 143 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
Though the Bills considered picking up Dodson as Matt Milano and Baylon Spector work their way back from injuries, the Dolphins ultimately claimed him from waivers.
Seattle’s head coach, Mike Macdonald, explained that the decision to waive Dodson was to allow opportunities for other players, including rookie Tyrice Knight. Rather than demote Dodson, they wanted to give him a chance to find a new role. “We really appreciate T-Dot,” Macdonald said, highlighting Dodson’s hard work and offseason rehabilitation efforts. “This move allows others to step up and gives Tyrel the chance to finish the season strong with a new team.”
Potential Boost for Bills Defense
The Bills may soon get a boost on defense. Head coach Sean McDermott recently opened a 21-day practice window for Milano’s return. While Milano will miss the upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs, his return seems close. McDermott said they will evaluate Milano’s progress each week as he recovers from a pectoral injury suffered in training camp.
