Ironman South Africa has confirmed the 1tragic passing of an athlete following an incident during the swim leg of Saturday’s Corporate Triathlon Challenge. The event took place during the Ironman South Africa weekend, which had athletes complete a 400m anti-clockwise swim from Hobie Beach in Summerstrand, near Port Elizabeth.We are devastated to learn today about the passing of a race participant following Saturday’s Corporate Triathlon Challenge,” Ironman stated.
“Safety personnel extracted the athlete approximately 320 meters into the 400-meter swim and transferred the athlete onto the beach for urgent medical treatment. The athlete was transported to a local hospital via ambulance where they continued to receive further medical treatment over the weekend. Despite best medical efforts at the hospital, the athlete sadly passed yesterday.”
The organization also offered condolences to the athlete’s loved ones and the community at large.
The unnamed athlete encountered difficulties about 320m into the course. Safety personnel promptly pulled the athlete from the water and provided urgent medical treatment on the beach before transporting them by ambulance to a local hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the athlete passed away over the weekend
