A runner participating in a charity half-marathon tragically collapsed and died during the event.
The incident took place at the annual Southend Half Marathon in Shoeburyness, Essex.
The East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) reported that it responded to a medical emergency on Mess Road shortly before 11:00 BST.
“Two ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle, a rapid response vehicle, and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the scene,” the service said. “Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical teams, an adult male was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Now in its 28th year, the Southend Half Marathon raises funds for the Havens Hospices charity.
The charity confirmed the runner’s death in a statement and shared that his family had been notified.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a participant in the Southend Half Marathon has passed away,” the statement said. “The runner collapsed during the race and received immediate medical attention.
“Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
“This is devastating news for the running community, and we extend our sympathies to everyone impacted by this loss.”
