Auburn Tigers star forward Johni Broome underwent an MRI on Sunday, revealing a non-surgical ankle sprain. The injury occurred during Saturday’s 66-63 win over South Carolina. Although the team’s press release provided limited information, ESPN’s Jeff Borzello reported that Broome will be out indefinitely, but fortunately, the absence is not expected to be long-term.
Broome’s injury appeared severe, as he stepped on a teammate’s foot and was in visible pain. He was unable to put weight on his left foot and did not return to the game after exiting with 14 minutes remaining.
This marks the second time Broome has left a game early due to injury, following a shoulder injury in the win over Georgia State. Fortunately, he did not miss any games due to the previous injury.
Auburn will now face the challenge of navigating without their top player, who is the frontrunner for National Player of the Year. Broome averages 17.9 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game, with 10 double-doubles this season.
The Tigers, currently ranked No. 2 in the country, sit at 15-1 and lead the SEC standings. Broome’s injury may impact their short-term performance, but his eventual return will be crucial to the team’s continued success.
