
Paddleboarders acting as water safety personnel on the Willamette River during the swim recognized the man was in distress in the water, said Brian Carrara, Salem Fire Department deputy chief for administrative services.Benjamin James Sherwood’s wife reported she last saw him at approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday at their residence on the 8800 block of Main Street in Mountain Iron. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Wednesday morning that Sherwood’s wife requested a welfare check for him around 4:16 p.m. Tuesday.The sheriff’s office rescue squad was dispatched and continued its ground and aerial search early Wednesday morning.Sherwood reportedly sustained an injury to his back and neck after recently slipping on some ice and suffered from a prior traumatic brain injury, the press release said.
