Grant Williams’ season in Charlotte has unfortunately come to an early end, just a month into the campaign. The former Celtics forward suffered a torn ACL, as reported by NBA insider Chris Haynes, and is expected to miss the rest of the regular season.
The injury occurred during the fourth quarter of the Hornets’ loss to the Bucks on Saturday. Williams seemed to confirm the diagnosis with a post on X on Sunday, thanking those who reached out for their support and saying, “Time to go to work, it’s all we can do.”
The 25-year-old was in his second season with the Hornets, playing a significant role under new head coach Charles Lee, a former Boston assistant. Williams was averaging 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 36.5 percent from beyond the arc. He had started seven of his 16 games for the rebuilding Charlotte team.
Williams began his career with the Celtics after being drafted 22nd overall in 2019, contributing to Boston’s playoff runs over four seasons. However, after the Celtics acquired Kristaps Porzingis, they chose to sign-and-trade Williams last offseason. He then joined the Mavericks on a four-year contract but spent only half a season in Dallas before being traded to Charlotte for PJ Washington.
With starting center Mark Williams also sidelined due to injury, the Hornets are now left with a significantly weakened frontcourt. Charlotte is currently 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 6-10 record.
